Anchor Scripture

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."
— Matthew 6:19-20

Core Kingdom Truth

The metrics that matter most won't show up on your performance review.

Devotional

Angela closed her laptop after another 12-hour day. She'd crushed her Q4 targets, secured three major deals, and earned recognition as the top performer in her division. By every corporate metric, she was winning.

But driving home, a question haunted her: If I died tomorrow, what would actually matter from this quarter?

The deals would close without her. Someone else would inherit her accounts. Her sales numbers would become a footnote in next year's report. The recognition would fade. Matthew 6:19-20 came to mind—she'd been storing up treasures that moths and rust could destroy.

That weekend, Angela took inventory. She'd missed her daughter's school play for a client dinner. She'd stopped mentoring the junior rep who needed guidance. She'd been too busy for her small group. Her success was impressive but temporary. Her impact was minimal.

Monday morning, Angela made a different choice. She blocked her calendar for her daughter's events—non-negotiable. She started meeting weekly with that junior rep. She said no to a high-profile project that would have boosted her resume but destroyed her margin for people.

Her numbers dipped slightly that quarter. But her daughter's face when she showed up to the recital? That mattered. The junior rep who landed her first big deal after Angela's coaching? That echoed. The friend from small group who said Angela's presence helped her through a crisis? That lasted.

Success and significance aren't the same thing. One shows up on performance reviews. The other shows up in eternity.

This Week's Practice

List three "wins" you're chasing this quarter. Next to each, write: "Will this matter in 100 years?" If the answer is no, identify one thing you could invest in instead that will echo in eternity—a relationship, a mentoring moment, an act of service.

Closing Prayer

Father, forgive me for chasing metrics that won't outlast me. Help me invest in what lasts—people, character, Your kingdom. Give me wisdom to know the difference between success and significance.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
