Anchor Scripture
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
— John 15:5
Core Kingdom Truth
Fruitfulness flows from connection to the Vine, not from your hustle.
Devotional
Michael had built his entire career on relentless execution. Early mornings. Late nights. Weekends. He wore exhaustion like a badge of honor. His results were impressive—but so was his burnout.
One Sunday, his pastor preached on John 15. The image stopped him cold: branches don't produce fruit by trying harder. They produce fruit by staying connected to the vine.
Michael realized he'd been operating on a lie: that his effort was what mattered most. He'd been striving instead of abiding. Hustling instead of trusting. Working for God instead of working with God.
That week, he made a radical shift. He started his mornings with 30 minutes of silence and Scripture before touching his laptop. He began praying through his calendar, asking God: "What do You want to accomplish today?" He said no to two projects that would have boosted his visibility but compromised his margin.
The first few days felt terrifying. If I'm not grinding, am I even working? But something unexpected happened. Clarity came easier. Decisions felt less frantic. Conversations went deeper. One major breakthrough came in a meeting where he'd actually listened instead of preparing his next point.
His output didn't drop—it shifted. Less frenzy, more focus. Less striving, more fruitfulness. Because he'd finally understood: the branch doesn't manufacture the fruit. The vine does. The branch's only job is to stay connected.
Jesus doesn't need your hustle. He needs your abiding.
This Week's Practice
Start each workday with this question: "Am I connected to the Vine right now, or am I running on my own strength?" If you're running on your own, stop. Take five minutes to pray, read Scripture, or simply sit in silence. Let God reorient you before you start producing.
Closing Prayer
Father, forgive me for believing my hustle matters more than my connection to You. Teach me to abide, not strive. Help me rest in the truth that fruitfulness comes from You, not from me.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
